Is trying to be a Boss Babe hurting you? Why not hustling is better.
As a business owner, it feels like I’m always one step behind. I feel guilty sometimes if I’m not working and being productive with most of my time. In our culture, we get a lot of messaging about hustling. And not deserving success if we aren’t overworked.
Enter the “Boss Babe” archetype, and you might find yourself in hot water.
Who is a boss babe?
She is the woman CEO who runs the place. She wears sunglasses indoors. She runs herself into the ground and isn’t allowed to show that she’s sweating. This woman is building an empire, and she doesn’t have time for her relationships or personal life. But doesn’t she look glamorous?
Isn’t this just another way to participate in business in a hyper-masculine way?
Work. Work. Work. Work. Work. Work b*tch!
We all know Britney needed a break from hustle culture.
You deserve one, too!
I am not Rihanna or Britney Spears. I need breaks! Don’t you?
Women have cycles to their bodies that occur naturally. We are affected by the seasons and the ebb and flow of our moods. We can work WITH this reality or work AGAINST it.
Working with it is much more in flow than forcing ourselves into robotic productivity.
Is employee mindset overworking you?
Are you feeling burnt out all the time?
You started your business to have more freedom over your time. But has it been giving you that? Or has it tipped the work-life balance scales too far to one side?
It’s easy to let your clients bully you into believing that you have to be on and working for them 24/7. But that’s now why you got into business for yourself!
You are good at what you do, and as you become more efficient and skilled, your rates should reflect that. As you free up more time for yourself, you don’t need to fill it with more work. Fill it with more joy. More things that light you up. More time with the people you love.
You are no longer working on a per-hour basis, so please stop treating yourself that way!
You don’t have an hourly rate, and that’s fantastic because it means you are also not limited by it. Believe me, it can feel like a crutch you want to hold on to for some sense of security. But it’s probably holding you back from the abundance you deserve.
Is business owner mindset overworking you?
Your business is your baby. You feel like you can’t let your eye off of it for a second or it will get hurt. Women in business have a nurturing instinct, and we just don’t know how to turn it off, do we?
You don’t have to turn it off necessarily. Maybe just redirect it to the things you value the most. Your business can and should be on that list. Ask yourself if the best place for it is at the top, though.
If there’s more work than you can reasonably handle on your own, you might want to consider building a team around you and spreading your abundance to others. Infusing new energy and other perspectives into your business can help it grow — and take some of the pressure off of you.
Can you work smarter and not harder?
The feminine energy is magnetic in nature. It naturally has an ability to draw things toward it. She doesn’t need to chase.
It’s like when I am trying to catch my Chihuahua puppy to put his leash on to go for a walk. If I run after him, he runs away, because he thinks it’s a game. If I stay in place, he approaches me, because he wants to be in my presence.
It sounds hokey, but is there something to it?
Honey, you can use those feminine wiles to work gentler and easier rather than being stuck in the overly masculine “Boss Babe” dynamic. We get to write our own rules for the game now.
Hustle culture will get you every time.
Hustling gives you a frantic energy that works against you in the long run. Not only does it burn you out, but it keeps you from being present and building real, lasting business relationships. Those relationships are what keep your business afloat and what keep people coming back to you over and over again.
Hustle culture causes you to see people as commodities, and that takes away from the vision you had when starting your business in the first place. Plus, no one likes to feel used or like you only contact them when you need something.
Examine where you’re spending the most energy and time and evaluate whether it’s serving you.
Where can you delegate or outsource work and free up more of your valuable time?
Is spending hours on social media really getting you more business? Or is it sapping a lot of energy for little return?
Would you benefit from a business coach or continuing education in your field?
Is there a tool available that would make you more efficient? (Smarter not harder, remember.)
When was the last time you did something for you and not the business?
Don’t get me wrong!
I LOVE a strong, powerful businesswoman. I LOVE a woman who paves her own destiny and builds her future with her own hands.
But I can’t stand a boss babe. Shiny on the outside, but the inside is wasting away.
No, ma’am!
In 2024, let’s kiss the idea of overwork goodbye.
